!! The man who sold the world !!

Monday – the day when minds of men find it hard to change their state from Alcoholic to Workaholic and tongues of women twist themselves from “Thank god it’s Friday” to “Oh my god it’s Monday”. The regret of adding one more weekend to the list of wreckful weekends was still on my mind when I woke up. Turned around to check the time and that’s when my roommate yelled at me “Its 7:15 already, don’t you have any plans of going to office today?” as if he loves dying in there.

I didn’t respond him rather started rushing towards bathroom forcefully, as hardly a few minutes were left out to catch the office bus. I knew I would require to smell the fragrance of inconvenience in BMTC buses for 2 hours to reach office in case if I miss office Bus. The moment I started brushing, there flashed a question in mind “Why many times I do things forcefully without keen interest in it?” . I consoled myself saying “this is not the right time and right place to find the answer”.

Put on enough deodorant to pretend everyone that I am fresh and active. The saying “Whole world will be in time or even early when we are late” turned out to be valid all the way from my college lecturers to this office bus driver. The driver was enjoying my 100 meters sprint but I made it finally.

Sandeep stuck with mobile on his left ear tried hard to convey “Hi” with his raised eyebrows, smile and right hand fingers waving in air. I responded him with an artificial smile conveying the message “I can understand your problem”. I rented the same old 3rd window seat for 1:30 hours. Sandeep who once used to sit in the same seat as I do now, changed his seat after his engagement. Looking at him I felt “Engaged couples” would top the list if someone does a survey of “Top 10 Mobile users”.

Again my mind started bugging me with many queries “Why am I doing some work forcefully though I don’t like to do? Can’t I work on what I really like? Why is it happening with me alone?” this never ending question list saw an end when my phone rang. The display “Nikhil Calling” was crystal clear on screen.

“Why the hell do you take so much time to pick the call?” Nikhil shouted at the other end as if he is the one who coined the word “Impatient”. He sounded as if he had something important to share. I controlled my screwed mood and asked him “Is there anything serious?” with high tone hinting him that I am already disturbed.
“Is something wrong?” Nikhil asked back.
“No” a true lie dropped out by me.
“Dude hectic schedule at office this week, all the more I am given all possible junk work on this earth. So have no mood to reach office neither any other options open. So just thought will talk to you and get started with the week. So what’s up with you?”.
“Go to hell ” looked around to ensure nobody in the bus heard it. I found it harder to digest the reason he called and the way he started with.
“I guess I started my week better than you. Take care of you & your mood, will talk to you in the evening” Nikhil disconnected.
Bus was through half its way when it got stuck in traffic near Halsoor lake. Priyanka Chopra on a big poster advertizing for spice telecom wasn’t looking much spicy that day though I admire her looks. The reason was clear “That’s my screwed mood”. Bus resumed its journey.

After listening to Nikhil I felt the problem is not just with me but with many people in this field. Many of us sometime go to work though we really not interested, many of us act as if we are doing the task voluntarily but the fact is something else. Why are we doing so? I was looking around if someone can answer this. That’s when I realized that bus stopped near office entrance and driver scolding someone. A few in the bus stood up to see what’s going on and so I.

An old man with untidy grey hair covering his face with big moustache and beard with no clear boundary in between them. Worn a old torn jacket with pair of different brand shoes. I saw him shouting and throwing sand at our driver. I stepped ahead to listen what he was saying. “None of you listened to me when I was king, so I sold this world. Now all of you are facing the heat and dancing for the tunes of someone else. Have fun guys.” He opened his ugly teeth to show his happiness that we are sold to someone else as didn't hear him. Meanwhile office guards rushed to rescue us from him. I couldn’t understand the reason behind his act but felt I got the answers that I was looking for since morning. For a while I felt that old man was correct in his statement that “We are sold to someone else and hence we pretend to be happy and do the work that we are really not interested in”.

But meanwhile the software Engineer in me jumped out and reminded that Patch for the escalated issue was supposed to be delivered today. I stepped into office with Sandeep who changed his 24/7 talking mode to 8/5 working mode.

Blu Ray Technology!!

Blu Ray Technology

It was day after my cousin's wedding ceremony got over. Everyone at home was very tired taking care of all arrangements on the day before. It was the day for relatives staying far from the native to say good bye and get back to their work stations. My uncle and aunt were busy seeing off my relatives till noon and could join us only by lunch time. The lively presence of family members added flavor to the tasty lunch that was served. Wondering what my cousin marriage has got to do with Blu Ray technology? Well, keep reading and we'll get there in no more time.

After lunch, youngistan conveyed uncle about their wish to watch a movie. And the poll for choosing the movie started. Granny with a blushing smile made her choice first, any of the Dr.Rajkumar's movies (Kannada). My little kiddo niece was the next to speak with the cartoon flick Ice Age being her choice. Mama, the muscular man in the family was flexing his muscles to watch any of Sallu bhai's flicks. Before I could speak out my choice, aunt interrupted asking us to check first if all those CDs are available at CD rental store.

My lil nephew traveling at speed slightly lesser than that of light was back in no time with "Rab Ne Banadi Jodi” DVD saying” That’s the latest movie they have got at store, it being a Sunday”. The disappointed smiles dint last long and the crowd was back into the mood as they gathered in the hall for the movie screening. My niece started humming title song as the titles started. Hardly 10 mins into the movie and everyone was frustrated with the clarity of it already. My nephew was sent back to CD rental store to replace it. Instead of taking it back, the CD store owner, a good friend of my uncle sent back a new DVD player saying that the same CD would play well in that player. And so right was he. The clarity was better indeed.

As everybody was enjoying the movie, I was amused thinking why our new CD player could not accomplish the same job. After the movie got over, my nephew started shooting many questions to his mom.
"Why the player from CD rental store did a better job than our CD player though ours was a new one?"
My sister looked at me for answering his queries. And with the little knowledge he had, the software engineer in me took a guess.

Showing something written on the player "Blu Ray" I told him, "it’s the latest technology in the market”. But he was not convinced with my answer and continued to grill me “what is Blu Ray technology? And how does it work?” etc.

I dint have answers to his questions at that point of time but later did some "googleing" to find them and wanted to share my findings with you guys. The Blu-ray players coming out will support upscaling of DVDs to 1080p/1080i, so our existing DVD collection will look even better than before.

Blu-ray, also known as Blu-ray Disc (BD), is the name of a next-generation optical disc format jointly developed by the Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA), a group of the world's leading consumer electronics, personal computer and media manufacturers (including Apple, Dell, Hitachi, HP, JVC, LG, Mitsubishi, Panasonic, Pioneer, Philips, Samsung, Sharp, Sony, TDK and Thomson). The format was developed to enable recording, rewriting and playback of high-definition video (HD), as well as storing large amounts of data. The format offers more than five times the storage capacity of traditional DVDs and can hold up to 25GB on a single-layer disc and 50GB on a dual-layer disc. This extra capacity combined with the use of advanced video and audio codecs will offer consumers an unprecedented HD experience.

While current optical disc technologies such as DVD, DVD±R, DVD±RW, and DVD-RAM rely on a red laser to read and write data, the new format uses a blue-violet laser instead, hence the name Blu-ray. Despite the different type of lasers used, Blu-ray products can easily be made backwards compatible with CDs and DVDs through the use of a BD/DVD/CD compatible optical pickup unit. The benefit of using a blue-violet laser (405nm) is that it has a shorter wavelength than a red laser (650nm), which makes it possible to focus the laser spot with even greater precision. This allows data to be packed more tightly and stored in less space, so it's possible to fit more data on the disc even though it's the same size as a CD/DVD. This together with the change of numerical aperture to 0.85 is what enables Blu-ray Discs to hold 25GB/50GB. Recent development by Pioneer has pushed the storage capacity to 500GB on a single disc by using 20 layers.

Blu-ray is currently supported by about 200 of the world's leading consumer electronics, personal computer, recording media, video game and music companies. The format also has support from all Hollywood studios and countless smaller studios as a successor to today's DVD format. Many studios have also announced that they will begin releasing new feature films on Blu-ray Disc day-and-date with DVD, as well as a continuous slate of catalog titles every month.

So tomorrow if someone asks you in another occasion, you as a software engineer will have the answers ready. Do share your thoughts and ideas on how you felt walking through this learning.

Time and Charm !!

It's a known fact that all batchmates after passing out of college do form a forum to keep themselves in touch with rest. Same thing happened with our batch as well. Infact we kept in touch even at corporate life. Everyone used to forward/mail their experiences, anecdotes etc in initial days. Gradually the mails count started dipping. Thats when my friend Kiran mailed everyone asking what is going wrong as she could see no mails circulating in forum.

I spent sometime putting myself into everyones shoes and sent following compose as a reply to her mail. I strongly believe this is general pattern that can be observed in every batch that comes out of college with lots of charm that only fades away with time. So just thoght of sharing with you all.

Her mail is in the end.

Hi Kiran,

Regret delay. Yea I agree with you. I remember people of Bellary saying only 2 seasons happen there round the year 1. Summer and 2. Super summer. Same way our forum has got only two states 1. Hibernate 2. Super hibernate. Just tried thinking what could be the reason and came out with the possible reasons below. Read on.

Summer heat is on and we feel it everyday from the time we step out of home till we reach office where many Air conditioners run breathless to cool us down. During our travel back home we wish our office bus would have been set up with AC and never delay pushing the fan button down as soon as we reach home.

Air is everywhere but we still need a fan to feel it. Doesn’t it sound strange? If yes I have another similar fact to share. With the lifestyle that we are living with, today becoming yesterday is just a blink away, which in turn will become day before yesterday and month will be last month. With all these months piling up, a year will rename itself as last year and we murmur our selves “Oh my God I can’t believe it’s been a year now” when crackers lightens up the sky on Decemeber 31st midnight.

If memories of those yesterdays become pages, memories of months will form a chapter and finally many chapters together will title a book called Life.

For sure every one of us has the memories of those college days and friends but need a driving force that can remind us of those moments and friends. The minute a new mail drops in from any of our group, we take moment out of our tight schedule and try going back to those days but the work pressure and other life tensions overshadows it all and drive us back into work.

All the more it is such a phase of life where everyone thinks of settling down in life which in turn steals away those happy moments and creates a cloudy atmosphere in day today’s life. So no wonder if these additional responsibilities layer masks us from mailing/meeting each other.

After looking at Kiran’s mail I gave it a try to find the answer to the question “why we are loosing charm of those days?” Though could not find the right answer, felt like sharing my thoughts. Being one among you I hope my thoughts will match yours. If not please don’t take anything personal. Just read, have fun and forget it.

During the initial days at work "Aale aale" frm Boys and "Feel my love" from Arya used to make us happy and used to reminds us those college days but now "Haule Haule hojayega pyar sajana" from Rab Ne Banadi Jodi makes us think about what sort of partner are we going to get?

Gone are those days when we used to enjoy each and every moment of movie putting ourselves into Hero/Heroines shoes, now the time has changed and we try learning something out of every movie we watch and forget to savor it in the hurry of making judgment.

What makes us think that we are too busy in life? If not all, many of us are thinking how adverse this recession can impact us. A few of us are pushing ourselves hard at work to remain in safe zone and a few others are bothered about personal/housing loan. Many in love are worried to approach their parents and those who got a go ahead from their parents are busy in searching the right date to tie the knot. Those who married are busy in unfolding their family. A few are confused whether to choose love marriage or arranged marriage. A few more are waiting for their brothers/sisters to get marry. A few are worried about the kind of alliances they are getting for their marriages. Someone is too much involved in thinking whether to settle in India or to go abroad. A part of group thinks now everything is over as they have crossed quarter of their life. These could be a few reasons why many of us think we want to stay in touch but can’t.

Other day I and one of my friends were walking down the street and we saw a banner “Vrishabh weds Vaishali” posted outside the marriage hall. Initially my friend had a smile on his face but it dint take much time to disappear. Out of curious I asked him “What made you smile and what stole that smile later?”. My friend replied promptly “The idea that used to strike me during college days when I used see this kind of banner was to have a free lunch buffet at hall saying either I am from girl side or from boy side though I never did it. But now that I am grown up and ready to mingle, this banner scared me when I imagined myself standing on the dais sharing an artificial smile with someone whom my parents liked. Also the thought that I might need to change the way I live for some one who will make a late entry in my life stole my smile away”. His response thrilled me as I could make out that the ways we think about a particular stuff vary according to age though I was not worried about the after affects of marriage. So no surprise if people who once thought they can’t imagine their life without friends subside sharing their thoughts and happy moments with the same friends in later part of their life. I guess no body can be held responsible for this as it is part and parcel of life.

Are we so lost that we can’t make a come back? I am not sure about you guys but for sure I am lost. Kiran thanks for the mail. It helped me to think something out of box and instigated to think that I have enough time to get lost.

Thanks,
Shreekanth
